Mix Dining
Mixing and matching dining chairs doesn't have to be intimidating….
and while we love a set of matching dining chairs, mixing two styles can bring so much dimension (and even function) into a dining space.
We've mixed and matched dining chairs in our projects quite a bit over the years, and although there's not a one-size-fits-all approach, there are a few "rules of thumb" that make the process a breeze.
Mixing and matching anything is all about creating an element of consistency in your pairings, whether that's style, shape, material, or even texture.
Here are 6 of our favorite ways to mix & match dining chairs:
No. 1: Alternate your armchairs
In The McGee Home, we did one of our favorite mixed-and-matched dining chair combinations with alternate armchairs. This look works because although the styles and materials are different, both chairs have a curved-back element, pulling the space together.

No. 2: Incorporate a bench (or two)
Another fool-proof way to mix and match dining seating is by incorporating a bench (or two!). Bench seating is great because it's comfortable, relaxed, and allows for more flexible seating when you have more dinner guests than expected.

No. 3: Use similar material tones
In our Calabasas remodel, we mixed and matched the chairs in the dining space with wooden upholstered chairs in the center and two woven armchairs on the ends. Although the styles are distinctive, the curved shape and similar wood tones pull the look together.

No. 4: Match style mix material
Even if you want to stick to a specific style, you can still create a mixed and matched dining look by mixing materials. In the two below examples, we went for a more traditional look with classic dining chair silhouettes and mixed materials on the armchairs for more dimension.

No. 5: Go texture heavy
In our Cove Remodel, we incorporated two different chairs in separate tones and styles with a common element of woven texture. Matching textures is a great way to make a space feel interesting and dimensional but still pulled together.
